Sustainability is central to our design methodology. We believe in making locally, acting mindfully, choosing materials and suppliers for their sustainability credentials, minimising waste and most importantly designing products that will stand the test of time.
When we build a kitchen we are more often than not replacing an existing model. From this experience we understand the factors that contribute to a kitchen’s demise. They include:
- poor quality craftsmanship and materials
- appliances and fitting failure
- a dated aesthetic
- a lack of design integrity, with poor workflow and inadequate storage and/or benchtop space.
This valuable knowledge informs our choice of materials, finishes and fittings and determines how our kitchens are designed and manufactured in the following ways.
Designing for longevity
Our team is committed to designing products that have the best chance of not ending up in landfill. We tackle this by:
- designing our kitchens to meet our customer’s specific site requirements and ensuring we understand their storage, ergonomic and lifestyle needs
- specifying a pared back colour palette and minimalist design that is timeless and provides a neutral canvas for changing design trends
- incorporating open shelving that allows the owner to express their personal style via the objects they display rather than the choice of permanent fittings and fixtures
- including generous benches and storage options and a practical layout that is comfortable and provides a good workflow. This ensures the kitchen has the capacity to serve changing needs over time
- creating robust kitchens through the use of quality, durable materials and hardware and by applying construction and installation methods that result in a hardwearing product.
Choosing low impact materials, fittings and finishes
In the construction of our kitchens we use materials, fittings and finishes that are both fit-for-purpose and support our sustainability mission. They include:
- panel products and solid timbers sourced from within Australia ensuring the supply is regulated by both state and federal legislation.
- laminate board, veneer and benchtop substrates with low levels of formaldehyde verified through the products’ EO certification
- low VOC water-based finishes for treating timber products
- bamboo because it is anti-microbial, fast growing, renewable and extremely durable *used in our accessory range
- Eco by Cosentino reconstituted stone made from 75% recycled materials *this is the specified benchtop in our K2 Kitchen
- locally manufactured steel products, such as the Cantilever handle and sink range offering an alternative to imported fittings
- select hardware and accessories sourced from German & Austrian companies with solid environmental credentials including, Blum and Kessebohmer. *Cantilever only specifies overseas products when an equivalent item that meets our standards for durability, functionality and ergonomics is not available in Australia
- low energy LED lighting for benchtops and cupboards.
Minimising our impact in the workshop
We have a number of initiatives at our factory designed to minimise environmental impact. They include:
- providing thorough design documentation that allows clients to understand and authorise their kitchen design before it is manufactured, reducing re-works and material wastage
- sourcing 100% carbon neutral electricity from Powershop, ranked by Greenpeace as Australia’s greenest power company
- using modern machining equipment that reduces waste and increases yield from our panel products
- recycling packaging, packing boards and packing crates.
We manufacture exclusively in Melbourne, Australia and approximately 80% of our suppliers are located within 15 km of our manufacturing facility. This reduces the environmental impact of transportation and allows our team to regularly visit these facilities. Our commitment to producing and where possible sourcing locally also contributes to maintaining a viable and highly skilled manufacturing base in Australia.
